A steel carriage door has the board lines stamped into the steel. A wood-look carriage door has separate boards laid over insulated steel, with deeper shadows and a stain finish.
What is a fiberglass face?
A fiberglass skin, textured like wood, over a steel frame. The face can't rust or rot, and the steel behind it is galvanized and painted. It suits homes close to the water.
Is it a heavier door?
Yes. The boards add weight, so the springs are sized to the finished door and the balance is tested by hand.
Does it hold up near the bay?
Composite and fiberglass faces handle damp air better than natural wood. Salt air is still hard on hardware, so ask for coated or stainless hardware and rinse the door now and then.
