Garage door repair in Terra Linda, San Rafael

Terra Linda was the Freitas family's dairy ranch until 1953, and the first house was occupied the following summer. Then came the Eichlers. Joseph Eichler built roughly nine hundred homes here between 1955 and 1965, the real thing, with the post-and-beam bones and the glass. The neighborhood joined the City of San Rafael in 1972, and its census tract is now the strongest homeowner ground in the city.

What the housing here is like

Eichler put the garage or carport at the front of the house, tucked under the same low roofline as the living space, so the door is part of the facade in a way it isn't on a conventional ranch. Some originals came with open carports, and both arrangements are on these streets today. On a house like this the door has to sit flush and run quiet. The whole design is horizontal lines, so a sagging or rattling door shows from the sidewalk. The non-Eichler streets carry the Alliance-built ranches that came first, from 1954 and 1955.

Worth knowing locally

The Terra Linda/Sleepy Hollow Open Space Preserve above the valley, over eleven hundred acres, exists because residents raised the money for it in 1975. Northgate mall at the valley mouth opened in March 1965, the same era as the houses around it.

What we expect to find

Original openings with sixty-plus years of service. A spring rated for about ten thousand cycles lasts roughly seven years at four cycles a day, so a Terra Linda door on original or old hardware is many spring generations deep. When one part of a 1960 installation fails, the rest of it is the same age. So when we replace a spring here, the cables and bearings get checked while the door is apart.

Getting to Terra Linda

Manuel T. Freitas Parkway and Del Ganado Road are the spines, following the creek up the valley. From downtown we come over Puerto Suello Hill on 101, which is why a short straight-line distance runs about three road miles. Call it six minutes when the roads are clear.

Questions about Terra Linda

Do you work on Eichler garage doors?

Yes. The door sits under the main roofline with less framing margin around the opening than a standard ranch gives you, so it's a different job. We work to keep the original look.

Can you replace a door without losing the Eichler look?

Flat, clean-line doors that suit the architecture are available from mainstream manufacturers. We'll show you the options and the prices before you decide anything.
